Guided by Voices
In 2009, Robert Pollard reunited the “classic era” (1993-1996) Guided By Voices line-up for Matador Records' 21st anniversary and a short tour: Tobin Sprout (guitar) “Mitch” Mitchell (guitar), Greg Demos (bass) and Kevin Fennel (drums), who recorded GBV's ground-breaking lo-fi album, Bee Thousand, which Amazon.com has heralded as the #1 All Time Greatest Indie Rock Album.
Following sold out shows and fantastic performances, Pollard took the band into the studio to record Let's Go Eat The Factory, which was released in January, 2012 to tremendous acclaim:
iTunes Single of the Week, iTunes featured album, David Letterman TV show appearance, NPR Exclusive First Listen, Rolling Stone Magazine Playlist, covers of Magnet and Ghettoblaster magazine...
In June, GBV will be releasing yet another new album, which ups the ante with the standout singles, "Keep It In Motion" and "Class Clown Spots A UFO"
Since GBV's breakup, their 1994 album Bee Thousand was heralded by Amazon.com at the top of their list (#1) of the "100 Greatest Indie Rock Albums Of All Time" and Spin magazine picked the record as #26 in the "Top Records of the Past 25 Years."
"If Matador at 21 were a game, Guided by Voices would've won -- they earned the most encores, the most fist pumping, the most singalongs, the most pushing against the stage and the most chanting of the whole weekend." - L.A Times
"Guided By Voices capped the (Matador) weekend with an amazing high-energy set..." - Rolling Stone
"Pollard's hooks have always ranked among rock's best." - Wall Street Jourmal
"Since late 2008 or so, Pollard has enjoyed a late-career renaissance, consistently rewarding those of us still paying attenion." - Pitchfork
Named after the J-L Godard film, Détective was initially conceived as a studio project by James Greer (Guided by Voices) and Guylaine Vivarat (Useless Keys, Tennis System). With the addition of Rory Modica on drums, the band recorded the single Very Fallen World (March 2012), followed by the EP Basket of Masks at Greg Ashley's (The Gris-Gris) Oakland CA analog haven, The Creamery (April 2012). Détective will tour nationally with Guided by Voices in September to support the release of its first full length album, However Strange.
"The music of the L.A. trio Detective sounds as if it could have come from dusty tapes found in the 4AD archive. (...) "Basket of Masks" trades in coy pop melodies, gritty post-punk guitar riffs and proggy krautrock instrumentals. Their sparse, lo-fi structures don't sacrifice texture, though; Vivarat and Greer have found the delicate balance between sweet and off-kilter that recall Stereolab and some Morr Music luminaries." -- BUZZBANDS.LA
"Basket of masks is absolutely sublime, and while its not an immediate grabber, oh it grows on ya, if you let it. (...) if you like the likes of Galaxie 500 – or anything Dean Warham related you should love this. (...) definitely of my favorite records of 2012." -- CAPTAIN'S DEAD
"The very balmy, easygoing sound of Détective matches perfectly with the late-spring/early-summer weather we feel when we open up our windows." -- MAGNET MAGAZINE
