The Tallent Brothers

The Tallent Brothers have been making music together since early childhood. Born in rural Southern Missouri to a farmer/Baptist minister and his high school sweetheart, Ben and Lee Tallent spent their formative years steeped deeply in a traditional way of living that is now obsolete. With such an upbringing, the brothers naturally developed a love and appreciation for the traditional musical forms to which they were exposed, both in and out of church.

After failing in a variety of endeavors, in the Spring of ‘07, Ben and Lee decided it was time, and left Missouri in their ‘76 model econoline with no real destination and very little cash. It was when they landed in the village of Woodstock , NY that things finally began to get interesting.

Upon learning that Levon Helm was hosting a Midnight Ramble that very night at his Woodstock home, the brothers decided to exhaust their travel funds and buy tickets to the show. After a chance meeting with Levon himself, and an invitation to return the following day, it became clear they had made the right decision.

That first Midnight Ramble marked the beginning of a friendship that would last for years...By the Fall of ‘08 the brothers were living in Woodstock, and spending a lot of time at Levon’s place, where Ben was working as a dog sitter, fire stoker, wood stacker, and recording engineer (earning album credits on Helm's Grammy winning Electric Dirt). It was during this time that the Tallent brothers forged a lasting relationship with Helm, who was more than happy to take upon the role of mentor to the young musicians.

Levon’s advice resonated deeply with the brothers, whose similar upbringings had instilled in them a deep appreciation of the values of Family and Hard Work. It was in this spirit that the Tallent brothers returned home to Missouri , to what remained of their family farm, where they began to write. Their lyrics taking upon greater meaning, their music guided by a higher purpose. And now, it is in this same spirit they share this music with you.
Enjoy.
