9:30 Club presents at U Street Music Hall
Colin Munroe, Cheyne
1115 U Street NW
Washington, DC, 20009
You may not expect one of the most compelling new voices in hip hop to wield dual psychology and sociology degrees from Stanford University or find inspiration in the buttoned-up world of indie rock, but for K.Flay, defying expectations is simply part of the game.
On stage, K.Flay is a one-woman whirlwind: whether she's creating beats, singing, rapping and playing guitar, her wit and acerbic charm shine through. Her talents have led her to share the stage with a wide array of artists including spending 2010 on the road with Passion Pit (Campus Consciousness Tour), 3oh!3 (Streets of Gold Tour), and various dates with Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, Travie McCoy and more, where she quickly won over audiences who hadn't seen anything quite like her before. Further setting her apart from the pack, she serves as her own producer in the studio, methodically infusing her hip hop swagger with a dose of sonic exploration.
Kristine Flaherty grew up outside of Chicago, devouring her father's classic rock records and staying up late to dance to Parliament-Funkadelic in the living room. It was this same musical open-mindedness that would later spark her artistic development. She found her musical voice in college, fusing the eclectic power of the Bay Area hip hop scene with her own unique presence, inspired by strong, independent female artists ranging from Missy Elliott and Lauryn Hill to Fiona Apple and Liz Phair.
K.Flay's debut self-released EP dropped on October 12, 2010 and has been receiving rave reviews nationwide. Also released are two mixtapes available for free on her website: 'Mashed Potatoes' (2009) and 'I Stopped Caring in '96' (2011).
: Colin Munroe is the Unsung Hero.
He spent his childhood immersed in music, teaching himself to play the drums, piano, guitar and record his compositions on his school's 8-track reel-to-reel, before moving from North Goer, Ontario to Toronto to attend university. Colin Munroe cut his teeth in the music industry producing hip hop and R&B for Canada's urban music community. After logging studio time with Glenn Lewis and Carlos Morgan, he co-wrote and produced 10 songs on Ray Robinson's Juno-nominated album, What it Is, and has cuts on the new Brassmunk CD (including How 'Bout feat. Moka Only) in addition to upcoming releases by Degrassi star Drake, Divine Brown, Saukrates and Frank n Dank among others. Recently several US artists have sought material from Colin including former Blackstreet member Chauncey Black (Universal/Motown), Sean Price and Brick and Lace (Geffen)
Cheyne is a sub genre defying, hip hop artist from Ocean City, MD. Currently residing in Washington D.C. He has opened up for such acts as A$AP Rocky, J. Cole, Mac Miller, Joe Budden, K.Flay, MGK, Big Freedia, Mickey Avalon and many more. Since the release of his most recent ep Nighthawk, Cheyne has been writing songs, and playing shows all over the east coast. He will be releasing his third ep Firebreather on August 3rd 2012!
