Michael Daves with Noam Pikelny and Brittany Haas

Grammy-nominated guitarist and singer Michael Daves tours three Northeast cities June 9-11 in support of his recently released two-disc set, Orchids and Violence (Nonesuch Records). Joining him for these performances are banjoist Noam Pikelny (Punch Brothers) and fiddler Brittany Haas (Crooked Still, Haas Kowert Tice).

Pikelny and Haas recorded with Daves on disc one of Orchids and Violence, along with Sarah Jarosz, Mike Bub, and special guests including Tony Trischka. On disc two, Daves recorded the identical track list of twelve, mostly-traditional bluegrass songs but in a raw, electric reinterpretation, and playing most of the instruments himself. It’s "a roots-music master class, a brilliant example of old modes reinhabited with flair," says the New York Times. "To his credit, it can be hard to pick which version of a tune is best."

Hailed by the Chicago Tribune as the “pros’ top banjo picker,” Pikelny was recently awarded IBMA’s Banjo Player of the Year and Album of the Year awards. Haas recently toured and recorded with the Dave Rawlings Machine and is regarded as one of the most influential fiddlers of her generation.

On May 6, Nonesuch released Violence and Orchids, the vinyl edition of Orchids and Violence. This one-disc mashup interleaves the bluegrass and electric versions of five songs from the double album, presenting side-by-side comparisons of the two versions of each song.
