New York-based traveler/writer/performer Andrew Demetre's fusion of storytelling session and DJ set, Radio XUAR: The Unheard Music, captures his journeys to Xinjiang Province,far Western China--the traditional lands of the Turkic Uyghur people--in kinetic fashion. Alone on stage,
armed with an iPod, Demetre bears witness to present popular, rare, beautiful, and banned music selections ranging from the deep Sufi roots to Uyghur Pop--a narrative spiced with music, legends, and seriocomic reflections of his travels in the remote Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

Radio XUAR: The Unheard Music transmits the sonic silk crossroads where musical traditions, virtuosic performances, pop idols, expression, reeducation, snuffed out brilliance, forbidden gatherings, and cassette-tape undergrounds converge and sometimes clash with politics and oppression, while paying homage to important Uyghur musical figures in their struggle to squeeze their expression through the strict filters of the CPC (Communist Party of China) in order to keep their musical and cultural legacies--and sometimes themselves--alive.
