There’s something shamefully alluring about seemingly innocent girls talking dirty, as long as they’re of legal age of course. And that’s just what The Baby Magic does. The little-known local three-some delivers minimalist, catchy indie-pop contrasted by vulgar lyrics, touching on subjects such as boners, violent sex and scat. At the head of this shocking trio is lead-lady Mary Beth Brennan, who also plays under the moniker Baggy Time, delivering lyrics like “I want to fuck like a sailor” (“Ass Against These Hands”) in her cutesy, childlike vocals.
Brennan is just plain adorable, even more so with a name that sounds like that of a Catholic school girl, but her sweet girl guise just makes her stage antics even more shocking. We’re talking about air-humping, fun with knives and maybe even a few sex toys. And in the same manner, the band’s recorded material sounds relatively clean and composed, but their live performance takes on a much sloppier, even thrashier feel as Brennan doesn't fuss over perfectly delivered songs but rather embraces being a wild, often offensive spectacle.
Of course, The Baby Magic requires a certain unrefined taste, and you may very well hate them. But if you can let loose to some hilariously vulgar tunes with catchy hooks, then head on down to the Empty Bottle tomorrow for a night of drunken catharsis. And since the band is hard at work this summer writing songs for their upcoming album, chances are they’ll give us a sneak peek at some unheard material.
We are a three-piece that formed in Chicago in 2008 and have since been playing various venues in the city proper. Our live performance is honest and straightforward; where excess vocals and effects lack we make up for in technicality and intensity. Most of our influences draw from 60's and 80's rock, but our sound lies on a foundation of Metal, Punk and New Wave; all of which Ryan and Justin have been experimenting with since middle-school. Lindsey on the other hand provides a dramatic pop element that brings accessibility to the overall sound, striking an essential contrast that most noise and grind bands tend to neglect. We aspire to be the wealthiest band in the world and one day perform on the Moon, no joke.
"The true pioneer of civilization is not the newspaper, not religion, not the railroad – but whiskey!" - Mark Twain
The Particulars have one goal and one goal only… to create the soundtrack to a lecherous night of sipping whiskey. There is no place for pretense in rock and roll, yet we promise to put on our best pants to please your eyes and ears.
There's two Chicago boys, Craig and Dave. Craig fills your garage with guitar smoke and Dave steals your mom's heart on bass. Then there's the two that stumbled across the Mississippi slurring their y'alls, Erin and Josh. Erin brings her guitar and a dusky, hillbilly howl. While Josh will boil your crawfish on drums and steal your cornbread while you're not looking on vocals. Sometimes their voices make matrimonial harmony.
