Shaun Murphy

Shaun Murphy, ( born Cheryl Murphy in The State of Nebraska, USA ), is an American R&B singer songwriter, best known for her powerhouse singing style. Her recording career started in 1971 with Motown Records and continues to this day.

Murphy moved to Detroit, Michigan as a teenager, singing in venues such as Detroit's historic Grande Ballroom and was noticed by an employee of Motown in a touring theater production along with Texas native Meat Loaf. The two were signed by Rare Earth Records, a division of Motown Records as Stoney and Meatloaf in 1971. The pairing was short-lived, and became defunct, as a decision of Motown management. Only Murphy was retained under contract after the breakup of the duo. 'Stoney' also recorded with the group 'Broadway' for a short period and worked with Skip 'Knape' Van Winkle of Teegarden & Van Winkle that also featured a pre-RCA Victor recording artist Dan Schafer on guitar and vocals.

After a period of inactivity with the new division of Motown in Los Angeles, she made a decision to leave Motown, due to corporate changes within the company, and contacted Punch Andrews for possible opportunities back in her high school home town of Detroit. Murphy then relocated back to Detroit, to work with Bob Seger, in 1973, with The Borneo Band. Murphy had worked with Seger previously in his very early years prior to his later notoriety. Murphy has worked with Seger on most all studio session work since 1973, and has toured with Seger since 1978.

She returned again to live in Los Angeles in 1985 to work with Eric Clapton on his Behind the Sun album. Murphy was then offered a position by Clapton as a member of his band to do the entire tour after hearing her vocal style. The Behind The Sun tour was featured at the first Live Aid concert in 1985.

Murphy's career in vocals has been both as band lead singer and session singer throughout her many years in the music industry. She has sung, toured, and recorded with such acts as The Moody Blues, Bob Seger, Herbie Hancock, Phil Collins, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh, Maria Muldaur, Bruce Hornsby, Michael Bolton, J.J. Cale, Coco Montoya, Alice Cooper and Little Feat, in addition to Broadway theater, in national road companies in two popular rock musicals, "Hair" and "Sgt. Pepper's".

In 1994, Shaun Murphy became a full time member, as well as the first female member, of the LA based band Little Feat. She stayed on for the next fifteen years, recording and touring with "The Feat" until 2009, when she decided to concentrate on her real passion for the blues.

In 2009, Shaun Murphy decided to go on her own as a solo artist. In September 2009 she released the album Livin' The Blues. A second album, The Trouble With Lovin', followed in 2010. Late in 2011, Murphy released a DVD and live album both titled "Shaun Murphy Live at Callahan's", recorded at Callahan's Music Hall, Auburn Hills, Michigan, just outside of Detroit.

Niecie, recognized for the soul running through her veins, was born and raised in Motown. Detroit served as a musical playground for Niecie. She sang lead and backup in various Detroit bands including soul, R&B, classic rock and what she is most famous for, the blues. Niecie grew up in a household filled with music from big band jazz to the psyedelic rock from the Woodstock era. All the rainbow of musical genres influenced Niecie’s style.

From Detroit, Niecie continued her musical journey in Chicago. It was here that the blues swarmed her soul and took hold of her spirit. Where else but Chicago! Niecie tore up the Windy City blues scene throughout the 1980’s.

“I’d like to give big thanks to two great blues artists, Larry McCray and Magic Slim. Both went the extra mile and showed me mad love giving me opportunities to be seen and heard. I never passed up an opportunity to be on stage with either one of them.”

“Niecie is a blues singer of the first order with impeccable taste in delivery and material. I can’t play her songs on my radio show without getting a barrage of phone calls from listeners wanting to know, “Who WAS that?!” –Mick Martin, Blues Party, KXJZ, Sacremento; KUOP, Stockton/Modesto; KKTO, Tahoe City/Reno; KQNC, Quincy; KXJS, Sutter.

Niecie’s new release “Beyond The Surface” is another hit CD. The plethora of talent that resides on this CD is amazing. Some of the same musical greats laid it down on this release, Nioshi Jackson, co-producer and drums, Johnny Neel on keys, Mike Durham on guitar. Also on keys is jazz great Jody Nardone and Brian Gary(Eddie Money). On bass, thumping are Steve Forrest(Wooten Brothers), Calvin Turner, and Jerry Navarro(Charles Walker and the Dynamites), Additional guitars are Shaun Bayles, Shean Smith and the wailing Adam Agati. Tasty percussion and angelic background vocals are slammed by multi-talented Crystal Taliefero(Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger, John Mellancamp, Faith Hill). This CD also was mixed and mastered by John Billings(Donna Summer.)

Niecie remarks, “There was so much love from everyone involved in Beyond The Surface. It blew my heart up! And the talent was incredible. I am truly blessed to have been amongst music industry royalty. Everyone rocked!”

The songs on Beyond The Surface really reflect Niecie. About her favorite original, Niecie states “ “Draw The Line” is a tune about getting to that point, taking no more, and not letting anybody or anything cross that line. When you’ve had enough. We’ve all been there!” And another original “Not No, Hell No” is about never going back. Moving on”. She continues, “All the cuts represent where I am at. I am honored to have tunes from the great Grammy winner songwriters Kim Morrison and Ronnie Godfrey. Their tunes rock!”
