True Life Trio
True Life Trio performs riveting vocal harmonies from Eastern Europe, the Americas & beyond. This innovative trio explores the creative possibilities of cross-fertilization of different traditions with unlikely timbres connecting Bulgaria to the Bayou. TLT’s improvisation-laced repertoire includes original songs and folk tunes from far-flung lands such as Albania, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Macedonia, Mexico, Poland, Ukraine and the American South.
Featuring the powerful vocal talents of three dynamic performers whose musical collaboration was forged in Kitka Women’s Vocal Ensemble, this Bay Area based trio delves deep into a vast array of folk music that lends itself to three-part vocal harmony, massaging and expanding the boundaries of these traditional styles. The result is a sweet, sonic explosion that melts in the listener’s ear and that is uniquely True Life Trio.
Currently, True Life Trio is working on their first full-length recording, Like Never and Like Always, which will be released on June 10, 2016. Like Never and Like Always, a collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Gari Hegedus, was originally commissioned by the East Bay Fund For Artists with premiere performances in November of 2014. This ambitious and exciting recording project is being produced by Eric Oberthaler and was recorded by David Luke at Opus Studios in Berkeley, CA.
True Life Trio is:
Leslie Bonnett: voice, fiddle, percussion
Briget Boyle: voice, guitar, percussion
Juliana Graffagna: voice, accordion, percussion
In 2016, Irene Sazer, founder and director of the Real Vocal String Quartet, is creating a new set of songs. In 2013, she received a grant to buy a 5 string fiddle to increase the range of the violin to accompany her voice. For the first time since her 1998 release of original songs, “First Things First”, Sazer is debuting her songstress wares, this time for just 5 string fiddle and voice. Sazer’s voice sounds ethereal and full of breath, soul. Her lyrics are personal, spun from life experience and an insighful optimistic inner voice.
The violin in her hands wails, sings and speaks virsuosically in many musical dialects…classical, jazz, roots fiddle, folk and pop which swirl together and combine into a unique and original sound, one that is truly hers. Irene Sazer is creating a set of original songs and a few precious covers to perform and record.
One original is called The Drift. The lyrics describe falling out of balance and how we find our way back. Another is In My Skin about reaching a point in life when we are able and lucky enough to accept where and who we are. Sazer’s cover of Sy Kahn’s Aragon Mill (made famous by Hazel Dickens) is haunting with bow scrapes and harmonics between lyrics illustrating wind blowing through an abandoned company town.
In addition to Real Vocal String Quartet, which is active as a composing collective and touring /recording ensemble (with a brand new CD release this month), Irene Sazer was an original member of the Turtle Island String Quartet, in Jai Uttal’s Pagan Love Orchestra, a commissioned composer and a widely sought after recording artist.
