Hardly anyone knows that Unknown Mortal Orchestra is some guy called Ruban Nielson. At first the ‘band’ was just a song called Ffunny Ffrends, which somehow found it’s way onto literally hundreds of music blogs in a few days after it was posted to a brand new bandcamp account. Over the months that followed, the Unknown Mortal Orchestra gradually invited willing listeners into a world where junk shop record collections came to life and recombined in freakish new combinations. Eventually, in keeping with UMO’s enigmatic moniker, a self-titled 7” EP was released from behind a veil of secrecy by UK imprint The Sounds of Sweet Nothing in 2010, sounding like Captain Beefheart, Sly Stone and RZA jamming on a creepy, never released kid’s show. For months Ruban was unable to bring himself to tell even those closest to him that he was making this music, and went about life as certain friends, family members and colleagues would start asking him if he’d ever heard about the Unknown Mortal Orchestra.
A hypnotic mixture of beat-laden trance, sensuous pop, sample collage and noise experimentalism, Doldrums come to us by way of Toronto, with numerous cult favorite releases, including a split with Portishead on XL, three 7" records on We Are Busy Bodies, and a VHS split with Parrot Talk.
Field Mouse is a four-piece dream pop band from Brooklyn, NY. Seamlessly interweaving influences from shoegaze, indie, and power pop, Field Mouse offers lush sonic textures and expansive soundscapes to complement the airy, wistful vocals of singer/guitarist Rachel Browne. Through complex and delicate harmonies, the songwriting of Browne and guitarist Andrew Futral breathes new life into common themes of lost love and renewal.
The band has been honing its sound since its formation in 2010, and has solidified its lineup with the recent addition of bassist Danielle DePalma and drummer Geoff Lewit. Their first release on Small Plates Records finds the group realizing its musical vision, incorporating rich synthesizers and feedback to give an edge to its soaring arrangements and pop sensibilities.
