Based in Knoxville, TN, 10 Years is an alternative hard rock band with an incomparable sound that is destined to create an island of its own. Formed three years ago, 10 Years created a strong underground following with their independent release Killing All That Holds You. In 2005, 10 Years signed with Republic/Universal Records, entered the studio with producer Josh Abraham (Staind, Velvet Revolver) and recorded their debut album The Autumn Effect.
The Autumn Effect has arrived just in time to counteract the cynicism and to take rock music to its next logical destination. "Humanity is slowly shutting down," says the band's frontman Jesse Hasek, who points to the current rock scene as a prime example of this lack of community. "Music is supposed to be about intensity and feeling, but there's no thinking behind the music that's out there today. We want people to think, to feel emotions again. We're always plugged in, or connected to something, part of the machine, but the more we plug in, the less human we become."
10 Years has evolved from a wake of high school metal bands, to the more melodic, heavy fusion of The Autumn Effect. "Less is more," the band says of their sound, and nowhere is that more apparent than the summer radio hit, "Wasteland." The title track swirls as an intrepid soundscape with an influx of modern aggression, from a whisper to a scream that could fill a stadium, from strum to angst and back again. Sledgehammer riffs propel the cosmic "Empires," while the sun-drenched "Prey" builds into a heavy metal gape, the perfect combination of breezy pacing and humid undertones. Melody marches through "Waking Up" and "The Recipe" is an exhilarating blitz of frenetic energy, while "Half-Life" kicks the ears in, each track exhibiting a new, distant depth of 10 Years' that seamlessly stretch them, morphing into a progressive realm far beyond the scope of modern flash-in-the-pan comparisons.
The Autumn Effect resonates as much lyrically, as it does musically. "Prey," for instance, was inspired by the band's move to Los Angeles to record their debut album, and Hasek's observation that people in L.A. drive cars worth more than some of the houses in their Tennessee hometown. "Empires" is about this generation of people who are addicted to material possessions and rely upon these possessions to satisfy all the needs of life. "The Recipe" is about how casual consumption of lust with random strangers devalues and destroys the ability to love. "We are living in an individualistic ego driven society that celebrates fame, lacks ambiguity that is incapable of deep sustained attention with no discontinuity between life and art. "Seasons to Cycles" is about people who build walls to separate themselves from others. In building walls we lose contact with people and we don't realize these same walls confine the growth of relationships. Whether we're talking about love, substance abuse, temptation, or whatever, all the songs are about life, and the emotions that we all go through," says Hasek. "Life is an organic process of growth and decay, and it is unavoidable in nature."
Over the course of the past year, 10 Years has opened for the likes of Velvet Revolver and Static X, more than holding their own, while making new fans all along the way. 10 Years offer more than just music and words they deliver a mission statement... Just call The Autumn Effect the soundtrack to our new and improved lives, a signpost to a future where we're more than just cogs in the machine, but vibrant beings that can touch the God within.
Fair To Midland
Fair to Midland is an American art rock band formed in 1998, consisting of Darroh Sudderth (vocals), Cliff Campbell (guitar), Jon Dicken (bass), Brett Stowers (drums) and Matt Langley (keyboards). According to the band's official website, their name comes from "…an old Texan play on the term 'fair to middling'." The group has released two independent albums, one studio album and an EP. Live at Coachella 2007 the band performed a live improvisational version of their song "Walls of Jericho" featuring the guest vocals of Serj Tankian. The band has toured with Serj Tankian, Dir en grey, Flyleaf, Wednesday 13, The 69 Eyes, As I Lay Dying, Chevelle, and 10 Years.
Fair to Midland was formed in 1998 by friends Darroh Sudderth (real name, Andrew) and Cliff Campbell. After their independent debut album in late 2001, The Carbon Copy Silver Lining, original drummer Jason Pintler left the band and former percussionist Brett Stowers took over the drums. For their second album, inter.funda.stifle, Matt Langley joined the band. He had previously played keyboards on The Carbon Copy Silver Lining. inter.funda.stifle was released in 2004. The album and the shows promoting it caused the band to get noticed by Serj Tankian, who signed them to his Serjical Strike label in 2006. The Drawn and Quartered EP was soon released, featuring interviews with the band, songs from inter.funda.stifle and live recordings. Fables From a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times Is True, Fair To Midland's major label debut, was released in June 2007. The band chose to re-record many of the songs from inter.funda.stifle which they felt could benefit from the bigger production values. A short re-release of their album inter.funda.stifle was available via the band's website in September 2009. The first 100 buyers obtained signed copies.
Fair To Midland is currently touring the USA with 10 years, Saving Abel, and The American Plague. In June 2008, they will once again team up with Serj Tankian and tour parts of Europe (Germany, mostly) promoting Fables From A Mayfly. They are set to perform at both Rock am Ring and Rock im Park, two notable concert events, in June 2008.
Fair to Midland were the winners of the 2007 and 2008 Dallas Observer Music Award in the Best Metal category.
KYNG the southern California hard rock trio, originated in January of 2008 in Los Angeles. Singer/songwriter Eddie Veliz bassist, Tony Castaneda and drummer Pepe Clarke Magana, after years of working off and on with each other on various projects, decided to propagate the idea of a band that would closer fulfill their musical desires. Within months of sessioning the three were sold on the chemistry and shortly after that went into the studio to record their debut album. The sound they realized was exactly what they had sought after, a unique and universally appealing combination of heavy and captivating concepts, channeling influences from black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin to the Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age. "We wanted a band that could stand alongside anything in the scene, have the ability to crossover seamlessly and still bridge who we are." KYNG's versatile approach of a sweet devastation bleeds from an artistic drive toward a momentum described as "California Heavy". Their evolution will undoubtedly blaze a trail that redefines what is expected and defines the giants they will become.
Their first album, Trampled Sun, on REALID Records is set to hit the streets of the US and the World Wide Web September 27 while their first two singles, Falling Down and Trails in Veins, both mixed by Mike Watts (Adelita's Way, Hopesfall, Quicksand, Brand New), are set to take over the airwaves and online channels mid July and will be available at iTunes July 26th. The digital deluxe of Trampled Sun will contain 15 tracks exemplifying the bands great range and how much music KYNG has to offer the planet earth.
The Los Angeles based trio, hailing from LA and parts of Mexico, is as unique in spirit as their sound. Reminiscent at times of the metal and hard rock of the late 1970's in style and musical collection, with a presentation that is totally heavy, classic and modern-day all at once, they are sure to refresh the Active Rock and Metal landscapes of today and tomorrow. As drummer Pepe Clarke Magaña puts it, "I think we're doing stuff, or a combination of stuff that has been done before, in a way it's never been done before." Their sound on Trampled Sun easily provokes the question, "Is that really just 3 dudes?" The pipes on Eddie Veliz reminiscent of Cornell is his early days, the thunder brought by Pepe Clarke Magaña on the drums and the rolling rhythms brought by bassist Tony Castañeda have KYNG meant for great things.
Completing dates with The Sword, KYNG is currently out with Black Stone Cherry and Pop Evil and plan on touring forever as the road is the life's blood of any young hard rock band looking to take over the world. In the land of pigs, the butcher is KYNG.
