SF Hackers: Come Chop Up our API and Make Some Cool Stuff With Us!

February 09, 2012

by Amy Miller, Community Manager

This weekend in San Francisco is the music hacker nerd party of the year, and we’ll be there, along with a handful of other innovative music tech companies – including Spotify, Soundcloud, Rdio, Rootmusic, The Echo Nest and more. Music Hack Day is a great way for our engineers and others to frankenstein the publicly available Ticketfly API and come up with innovative music integrations. The event gathers some of the most talented developers in the music industry to shape the future of music.

The developers who come up with the most innovative concepts during the weekend will win two NoisePop badges. OOohhh!!

This year’s Noise Pop line-up includes:
The Flaming Lips (what?!)
The Dodos
Die Antwoord
Wye Oak
Archers of Loaf
….and many many more.

(Not to worry. Nerds from out of town will be able to choose a Ticketfly event in their own city.) Secondary prizes available for our other favorite ideas!

Should be a grand time!

Follow us @ticketfly and watch #musichackday on Twitter to learn more.

Ticketfly Friends Left the Pollstar Conference with some Trophies in Hand

February 06, 2012

Saturday night at Club Nokia in Los Angeles, several Ticketfly clients and partners showed up to see if they would be taking home any of the touring industry’s most notable honors at The Pollstar Awards, the wrap-up to the heavily attended Pollstar Live! Conference. Here’s who we were shamelessly pulling for amongst the nominees, with 100% bias.

• 9:30 Club, The Troubadour, and The Independent for Nightclub of the Year
• Danny Zelisko and Seth Hurwitz for Promoter of the Year
• Bryan Duquette of The Independent and Brian Smith of The Troubadour for Nightclub Talent Buyer of the Year
• Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theatre for Best New Major Concert Venue
• Merriweather Post Pavilion for Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue

Happy to report that the team didn’t go home empty-handed!

ACL took home the prize for Best New Major Concert Venue! It’s a well-deserved award. Their Downtown Austin theatre is absolutely gorgeous. Not to mention that it’s a green venue and hosts some of the best touring acts in the industry. Our good friends (and partners in Philly’s popular Union Transfer) Bowery Ballroom snagged Nightclub of the Year as well.

A big congrats to The Windish Agency for their Top Independent Booking Agency and Top Agent awards! And double thanks to them for kindly housing our VP of Sales, Tom Ewald, in their Chicago basement. We’re looking forward to some pretty crazy parties at SXSW (hint hint keep your eyes here for RSVP and line-up info!).

During the conference portion, our CEO Andrew Dreskin sat on a panel about Alternative Ticketing and moving inventory via social media channels, alongside Ticketbiscuit, Goldstar, Scorebig and others. The search is on for viable ways for promoters to move that difficult inventory.

Since Ticketfly was involved, you can be sure the event was not all business. Our party made Billboard! Turns out if you give away tacos and drinks, you can get Windish, Goldenvoice, Live Nation, Sherpa Concerts, Rose Presents and more all in the same room.

Thanks again to our friends at Pollstar for hosting this crucial event!

The 2012 Ticketfly Marketing Summit Rocked Our World!

January 20, 2012

by Amy Miller, Ticketfly Community Manager

This week, Ticketfly had the great pleasure of bringing over 100 of our clients out to San Francisco for the first annual #TicketflySummit. Held at Union Square’s Parc 55 Hotel, the Summit was equal parts learning, testimonials, music, parties, bonding and workshopping. Partners in attendance included The Troubadour, Congress Theatre, IMP Presents, Sunset Promotions, Danny Zelisko, Monqui Presents, Austin City Limits, R5 Productions, Knitting Factory Entertainment and many many more. As a young company, this was the first time we’ve really been able to get so many of our valued clients in one room and be able to share our experience and knowledge while getting their feedback. It was magic!

Here were some highlights!

Monday

We kicked things off with a party at 111 Minna. DJ Aaron Axelsen provided the soundtrack and Peter Solmssen provided some of the scenery. It was incredible to see so many of the country’s most influential live music promoters getting drunk in one room. If a bomb had hit, the touring industry would have taken a real dive. Too morbid? Probably. During the party, we also got some live interviews with Ticketfly clients. In response to the question “Why Ticketfly?,” we tended to hear the same things over and over- Product, Support, Social features and a team that “gets it.” Almost everyone we interviewed said that Ticketfly has saved them tons of time since they switched. We’re glad we could free up some partying time for you guys!

Tuesday

The first full day of our conference started out with some opening remarks from CEO Andrew Dreskin and CTO Sean Porter about Ticketfly’s goals for 2012 and where we stand in the industry. The term “Death Star” may or may not have been thrown around. Perhaps the highlight of the day for some of the newer promoters in the room was the war stories-trading panel between industry pioneers Danny Zelisko and Seth Hurwitz. On the post-merger switch to Ticketfly, Seth commented: “I just couldn’t have my competition selling my tickets.” The day rolled along with in-depth panels from Facebook, The Roxy and Ticketfly’s Community Manager. And of course, it wouldn’t be a Ticketfly event without another party. We took the crew to dinner and drinks until the wee hours. It didn’t feel that awesome the next day.

Wednesday

Our final day of festivities was probably the most lively. The topics of the day were branding your venue, and promoters working together, which is always a taboo topic in the promotions world. The conference panel held the likes of IMP Presents, Austin City Limits, PopGun Booking and Johnny Brenda’s. The Satellite’s post-Summit newsletter puts it best:

“My big takeaway was that venues need to stick together – because at the end of the day, the more that people are going to shows (at any club), the better off we all are. With all the great bands out there, why compete when we can instead strengthen our music communities and our neighborhoods (even if at the expense of our livers)?” Amen, Satellite!

To close things out, The Fly Awards recognized some of our most stellar partners. A few lucky winners:

R5 Productions- Best All-Around Use of Social Media
DAYGLOW, LLC- Best Facebook Sales
Knitting Factory Entertainment- Best All-Around Use of Ticketfly’s Tools

I wish we could give everyone an award! It’s difficult to put into words how beneficial this week has been for both us and our partners, and how amazing our clients are. We are looking forward to a productive and successful 2012 for Ticketfly and the live events industry. It’s exciting to be on a disruptive team and have some of the country’s top promoters joining in the fun. And with the immediately post-conference Facebook announcement we’re certainly not showing any signs that we are slowing!

How did we end the final afternoon of our Summit? Well, yeah obviously. #hairofthedog

9:30 Club Nabs Top Club Award for the 3rd Year in a Row!

November 11, 2011

Yesterday, Billboard’s 8th annual Touring Awards wrapped up in New York, and the 9:30 Club stayed firmly planted (for the 4th time over all!) in the Top Club category. The Top Club award is based on attendance. For more than a dozen years, the 9:30 Club has been the top attended club not just in the nation, but the world. The WORLD!

“There is nothing like the magic of seeing a band at the club. The audience knows it, the bands know it, and they feed off each other. I just love seeing everybody having those moments. I’ve said it many times before, and I’ll say it again. It’s all about our staff. If they’re reading this — THANK YOU!!!” said Seth Hurwitz, IMP Chairman and 9:30 Club owner.

At Ticketfly, we can attest 100% to the dedication of the 9:30 Club staff. The attention they pay to their ticket buyers at all hours of the day and night definitely stands out amongst our roster of client venues. We know the names of their box office staff. And Tom Pelton, the club’s ticketing manager? I don’t think that guy sleeps. The incredible staff gets up to 1,200 music fans a night through its legendary doors on 9th and V and always ensures an awesome show. Their door guy even has his own Facebook fan page and t-shirts. And the fans? They’re among the most venue-dedicated bunch I’ve ever encountered. The 9:30 Club website hosts an online forum where its most loyal buyers can sound off on just about anything. And boy do they let you hear it. Their complaints/ praise/ music recommendations/ personal issues are moderated by 9:30 club staff and occasionally punctuated by the occasional hilarious and terse response by the Chairman himself. (This one actually just made me laugh out loud.) And no matter how mad anybody might get over….whatever, they keep coming back. Because the 9:30 Club experience is unmatched.

Perhaps the only thing more incredible than the 9:30 Club’s ability to keep a fanbase so strong that their customers will see virtually any show there, is that two years ago, Seth ran through and turned over all the money-changers in his ticketing temple and made the switch to an upstart ticketing company in its first few months of operation. 9:30 Club was one of Ticketfly’s very first clients, and making that switch has meant better sales, more sold out shows, and more awards. A lot of venues and promoters think- “Well if I move to an indie ticketing company, will my customers know? Will I sell as many tickets as I’m selling on this legacy system? Ideally, I’d love to sell more.” There’s no arguing with the numbers. We’ve got this. Ticketfly is doing something right and music fans are ready for change. The combination of our suite of marketing tools, our integrated websites and mobile apps, and our experienced team of promoters, marketers, ticketing verterans and live music fanatics means that you don’t have to rely on an ancient email list and a big name. There’s a reason why in 2 short years, we’ve grown to become the second most successful ticketing company in the United States. We know what we’re doing!

Ticketfly is glad to call 9:30 Club a partner and see their sales continue to improve. The only real drawback is keeping up with all the awards they win.
